The Traditional Equipment of the Haenyeo

Traditionally the Haenyeo of Jeju Island went into the cold sea waters around the island with minimal or no clothing. However, this changed when the royal court of Joseon started to dispatch official administrators to their southernmost border. These administrators were shocked by the stark nakedness of the women, and they forced the women to wear clothing while they worked. This caused some problems as clothing only slowed down the Haenyeo when they dived below the water so they had to improvise.

The Mulot was the official terminology of the outfits the Haenyeo wore when they worked in the ocean. The Mulot was composed of three pieces: the mulsugon, the muljeoksam, and the mulsojungi. Starting from the top, the mulsogon was a swimming cap like piece of clothing that prevented the hair from obstructing her during her work. The muljeoksam, was a lighter version of an often-worn piece of clothing. It was mainly made of cotton to minimize the effects of water when the Haenyeo were swimming. Likewise, the mulsojungi, was a cotton pant that also helped minimize the water effects. The mulsojungi had openings to the side that helped control the Haenyeo change the size of the clothing to be tighter if the situation called for it. The mulsogon was replaced by a more effective helmet like clothing, the kkaburi.

The trademark tools used by the Haenyeo are the tewak and the bitchang. The tewak is a round gourd- in which the Haenyeo used a natural buoy. Additionally, the tewak has a net attached to it to store the seafood harvested by the Haenyeo. The harvesting was done by using a bitchang. The bitchang is a long tool the Haenyeo used to harvest abalones. Other equipment such as the jonggaehomi was specialized in harvesting seaweed.

Currently, the Haenyeo use the most current equipment. They use neoprene wetsuits which help conserve their body temperature as they dive deeper. They use a better version of the single lens water goggles to help navigate the dark sea waters. The better version has greater structural integrity and prevents water from leaking in. Nevertheless, the still do not use air tanks as it goes against their traditions and core belief: One should take from the sea only what one can naturally obtain.
